About Providence, RI
Providence is the capital and most populous city in Rhode Island, with about 190,000 residents in one of the most historically significant urban environments on the East Coast. Founded in 1636 by Roger Williams, the city has been continuously inhabited and built on ever since, which is reflected in its housing stock. Most homes in Providence are over 85 years old. Providence is a compact, walkable city where neighborhoods sit close together, lots are small, and most homes are within a short distance of the street.
The housing stock is diverse in character but consistent in age. The East Side, anchored by Brown University, the Rhode Island School of Design, and the historic architecture of Benefit Street, has large Victorian and Federal-era homes on larger lots. Silver Lake, Olneyville, and Smith Hill are filled with triple-deckers built from the 1880s through the 1920s to house the city's immigrant working population. Federal Hill, known for its Italian-American character and the arch over Atwells Avenue, has a mix of residential and commercial buildings on tight lots. Home values across much of Providence have risen significantly in recent years, and owners are investing in their properties accordingly.
We serve Providence homeowners across all neighborhoods and also work regularly in Boston, MA to the north, where many of the same pre-1940 housing conditions and frost depth requirements apply. If your property is in Providence or a neighboring Rhode Island community, call us and we will schedule a site visit within a few days.
